South west France Wines

Southwest France is another wine region of France. Stretching from Bordeaux to the Pyrenees. The area is heterogeneous and does not create a whole. Thanks to extensive disintegration of the Midi wine (which was part of South West France), the individual appellations scattered throughout the southwest part of France. The boundaries are not so easily drawn by. The first mention of wine are up to 2000 years old. Lying north of the city Bordeaux had the great merit of reducing the production of wine in this area. In the 13th 14th century and has issued several rules that prohibited the distribution of wines from southwest France, before we sold all the wines of Bordeaux. These restrictions had disastrous consequences on the region's wineries, which is quite a shock to this long discussed.
At present, some appellation (Bergerac, Bearn, Monbazillac) use exactly the same cuvée for the production of red and white wines as Bordeaux. Most offer quality wines at a decent price. Some appellations, however, use their local varieties with which reaps success. For example. Jurançon, Cahors, Gaillac, Madiran, etc.
The area thus offers a relatively wide range of wines (red, white, sweet, but sparkling wine). Based on the varieties used or taken over local varieties (Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Gros and Petit Manseng and others)

Blue varieties

  • Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot (Bordeaux varieties typical, characteristic is given by area)
  • Tannat (high tannin content, blends with Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc has aromas of raspberries, it is hard, for long-term archiving)
  • Malbec (variety gives the wine a dark to black, has a high tannin content and requires several years of maturation, at present, reducing the acreage - only 1,000 hectares wheels)

White varieties

  • Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadet (typical of Bordeaux varieties, described by region)
  • Gros and Petit Manseng (varieties typical of the region, is used to produce dry and sweet white wines, aromas of flowers, honey, apricot, white and exotic fruits)
  • Ugni Blanc (fruity and refreshing wine with higher acidity, the use for the production of cognac)
