Vall de Loire

A beautiful wine region, which stretches through the valley of the Loire. The area extends from the Massif Central to the Atlantic coast around the city of Nantes. The region is full of beautiful countryside, historic towns, villages and ancient castles. History is there to feel literally at every step. We visit the grave of Leonardo da Vinci's famous Orleans or the city office of Joan of Arc and many other memorable places.

The main landmark is of course the river Loire, which flows through the entire region. Its length is over 1000 km and rooted in the French Central to southern foot of Mount Gerbier de Jonc. This extensive wine area is home to a wide range wines. The most important are the white wines (dry but also sweet), are equally excellent red wines and sparkling (or Saumur appellation Crémant de Loire). The region is divided into 4 sub-Nantes (production of white wines, lightly sparkling), Anjou (red, white - dry, sweet, pink and sparkling wine), Touraine (white and red wines), Central France (white and red wine).

The above information shows that the entire wine region offers all kinds of wines that are produced throughout France.

Blue varieties

  • Grolleau (formerly widely used variety, currently in decline, giving wines with lower acidity, fresh fruit for making wine)
  • Cabernet Franc (locally called Breton, smooth and velvety wine, powerful and yet fruit - raspberries, black currant, herbal tonnes)
  • Cabernet Sauvignon (in blends with Cabernet Franc gives the wine structure and power)
  • Gamay (for producing rosé and red wines, light fruity wine with a fresh taste, lower tannin content)
  • Pinot Noir (for producing rosé and red fruit character, rather, especially in the middle of the Loire)

White varieties

  • Chenin Blanc (local name Pineau de Loire, the most important white variety in the Loire gives a wide range of wines from dry wine with a hard steel acid to honey-sweet white wines, as well as production of sparkling wines
  • Muscadet (or Melon de Bourgogne, the home county of Nantes, is used for the production of fine dry sparkling wines that are produced by the "sur lie"
  • Sauvigon Blanc (crisp dry wine, especially in the middle of the Loire - well-known appellations such as Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé - intended for short-term archiving)
